Wine tourism in the Alentejo region experienced a remarkable 27% growth last year compared to 2022, as reported by the Regional Wine Commission Alentejana (CVRA). The Portuguese market led the way in visitor numbers, followed closely by tourists from Brazil and North America.

Francisco Mateus, president of CVRA, emphasized that wine tourism is a vital component of the Alentejo’s tourism sector, significantly contributing to the region’s economic dynamism. The area’s rich winemaking tradition, coupled with its internationally recognized wines, makes it an attractive destination for tourists interested in exploring the culture, gastronomy, and unique experiences offered by the region. In 2023, Alentejo welcomed 160,148 wine tourists, an increase of 34,118 visitors from the previous year. The national market made up 50% of these visitors, but the region is also seeing substantial growth in interest from Switzerland, Spain, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Notably, Canadian visitors showed the highest increase, with a 75% rise.  For investors, this growth in wine tourism highlights the potential for further development in the Alentejo region, making it a compelling opportunity for those looking to capitalize on the expanding tourism and hospitality sectors.
